On this estate property in Jamul, the homeowners did not want a standard rectangular pergola. They wanted to keep the footprint and flow of their original wood pergola and upgrade it to a low-maintenance, fire-resistant aluminum system. They chose the Elitewood Series pergola by Four Seasons Building Products.
The video covers the demolition of the old wood pergola, the engineered surface mount base plates set on the original footing locations, the custom beam layout held on tripod stanchions, and rafter spacing across long-span sections over 27 feet. It was one of three structures we built on the property.

Welcome back to another project with Southwest Builders. Today we're taking you out to this beautiful estate property in Jamul, California, where our team designed and built three custom outdoor living structures for these homeowners. In this video, we'll be focusing on the larger custom freestanding aluminum pergola installation.
Rather than building a traditional rectangular pergola, the homeowners wanted to recreate the overall footprint and flow of their existing wood pergola, while upgrading the space with a cleaner, more modern, low-maintenance and fire-resistant aluminum system designed for long-term durability and outdoor enjoyment. For this, they selected the Elitewood Series pergola by Four Seasons Building Products. We are an Elite Pro Dealer, which means we're in the top 5% of dealers for our Four Seasons product, and we're very proud to offer it.
The project begins with the demolition of the original freestanding wood pergola. Our crew carefully starts by removing the upper framing sections before moving on to the larger structural beams below. Throughout the demolition, protecting the surrounding concrete surfaces and existing outdoor living areas remains a top priority.
Once demolition is complete, we begin laying out the new pergola footprint and preparing the engineered surface mount base plates that secure directly to the existing concrete footing locations from the original structure. We make certain that our pergolas are engineered for structural safety.
From there, the new aluminum support posts are installed and carefully aligned before we begin laying out the custom structural support beams you can see here. Because of the non-traditional shape of this pergola, precise layout and spacing become extremely important at every stage of the installation. Using our custom tripod stanchion supports, the crew carefully squares and aligns the primary support beams to establish the final footprint of the pergola and keep a clean visual flow throughout the entire outdoor space.
Once the main structure is complete, we begin laying out the rafter spacing across several long-span sections measuring over 27 feet in length. Taking the time to carefully balance spacing and alignment throughout the structure helps create the clean architectural lines that define projects like this. After finalizing the rafter layout, we move into the custom extension sections and the remaining finish details that complete the structure and tie the entire design together.
And here is the completed custom freestanding aluminum pergola. You can see we built two on this estate. The open pergola design lets natural light and airflow pass through the space while still creating comfortable shade over the seating and entertaining areas below.
By choosing an Elitewood aluminum pergola system, the homeowners now have a beautiful, low-maintenance outdoor structure designed for long-term durability, fire resistance and lasting outdoor enjoyment compared to wood construction.
