This large freestanding pergola covers the dog area on a Jamul property with an orchard and wide views, one of three structures we built there. A partner company was putting in turf that lines up with the footings.
The video shows why a freestanding pergola starts at the foundation: steel posts anchored and countersunk into concrete footings, sleeved in Elitewood, then steel-reinforced header beams engineered for span, uplift and lateral loads. Rafters are laid out to engineering specs and the lattice tubes go on last to lock the structure together and provide the shade.

Welcome to another video with Southwest Builders. We appreciate you joining us. We have a big project here that we're working on: three different patio structures on this beautiful property in sunny San Diego, with a beautiful orchard and amazing views.
Right here we're going to have one freestanding pergola built into this custom space. A company we partner with is going to put some nice turf in here. This is the dog area, so there will be a nice, large freestanding pergola in here, and we're going to pour footings.
Strong freestanding pergolas start with the foundation. On this build, that means steel posts anchored into concrete footings and countersunk for a clean finish. Footing and attachment methods are always determined by engineering and site conditions. In this case, these footings were purpose-built to support a steel core system designed for this layout, and the turf is going to line up really cleanly with those footings.
Once the structure is set, we sleeve the steel posts with Elitewood, an Alumawood-style aluminum system that delivers the look of wood without the maintenance, rot or fire risk.
Next comes the header system. You can see our crew installing it. These beams are steel reinforced as well, and engineered to handle the span, uplift and lateral loads, which is crucial on freestanding structures such as this one.
We then lay out precise rafter spacing, keeping everything measured, squared and installed to engineering specs. The lattice tubes go on last, locking the structure together and completing the pergola's architectural profile. They provide that beautiful shade.
This project didn't require permits, but it was still built to engineering standards, because good construction doesn't depend on inspection. It depends on intent.
Alumawood-style systems like Elitewood are ideal for high fire areas and insurance-sensitive properties. They won't ignite, they won't rot, and they require virtually no maintenance.
