About This Build

This Clairemont Mesa home had termite-damaged wood pergolas, and attaching new covers to the house would have left the lowest beam at about six feet. We built three custom Elitewood structures instead: a roof-mounted insulated patio cover over the hot tub and two pergolas.

The roof mount beam lift design gained almost two feet of height, so the lowest point of the front beam is nearly nine feet. The video also shows the lattice tubes set for roughly 70% shade and 30% sun so the living room slider still gets natural light, a walkway section along the house, outdoor dining off the kitchen, and the can lighting and GFCI switch we wired.

Welcome to another video. In this video, you'll see the process of building three custom Elitewood patio covers: one insulated patio cover and two pergolas.

Here's the insulated patio cover, and as you can see, it is a roof-mounted custom design. We removed the old ledger; you can see we're at the end of the demolition here. There were wooden pergolas there. Now we're locating the position of our custom roof mount brackets.

The roof mount design is intended to achieve more height. Without this roof-mounted design on these patio covers, the lowest point, that support beam, would be approximately 6 feet or so off the ground, so many of us would hit our heads on it. This custom roof mount beam lift design allows us to elevate our patio covers. In this instance, I think we gained about a foot and a half, almost 2 feet, of additional height. I believe even the lowest point of that front beam is almost 9 feet, so we were able to gain quite a bit of additional height with this roof-mounted design.

Now we're locking the roof panels in on top of those beams. Those insulated foam core panels will keep the heat out, and they'll keep it insulated in rainstorms. You can also stand on them. As you can see, they're structurally sound, very stable and secure, and you have real peace of mind with an insulated, solid patio cover. The guys are installing the rain gutter trim system on the front, and finishing out the side fascia trims with the 2 by 6 fascia.

This is a pergola, which allows some of that filtered light through. It's also roof mounted to gain as much height as possible. You can see they're setting all the rafters in place, locking them in with fasteners on the support beam. There are a lot of really technical details to building these custom Elitewood Alumawood pergolas and patio covers, and a lot of tricks of the trade to work with the materials correctly.

You can see they're laying out the lattice tubes on top. We dial those in and customize them so you can have the exact amount of shade you would like. In this case, we went with about 70% shade and 30% sun, so you get a little more shade but still some nice filtered light. That's the living room there, with the sliding door. He wanted a little bit of natural light, and that's how we achieved it with this beautiful pergola.

Now we're removing the wood ledger from the pergola that ran along the side of the house. This was a termite-ridden wooden structure, and it was also rotting. Insurance didn't like that, so the homeowner decided to upgrade, to save some money on his insurance and have a brand new pergola backed by a limited lifetime warranty. You can see the guys laying out the posts and beams.

This pergola has one section that runs longer along the house, more of a walkway cover; I think that was about 5 feet. The rafters they're installing right now are, I believe, 8 feet in this portion of the pergola, and over the slider that gives them space for a small table and a couple of chairs. A nice place to have breakfast or your coffee in the morning. It's right off the kitchen; you can see the kitchen window there. So they extended their dining space to include a beautiful outdoor dining area. Now they're installing all the lattice shade on top, and you can see how much nice shade is cast down the side of the home.

And the finished product: three beautiful patio covers on one home, including two pergolas. You can see the roof-mounted design here. Otherwise it would have been far too low if we had attached to the house, far too low on this side. On the left here, we had just enough room that the clearance was acceptable, but still low. So much better here, so much more breathing room, so you can enjoy your pool with family and friends out here.

The beautiful insulated patio cover, with can lighting, spans the hot tub here. Again, it's another roof-mounted option to get that much-needed height. There's a custom switch with GFCI, and we handle all of this electrical work. Beautiful LEDs light up your space as you're enjoying it in the evenings.

The homeowner is very happy, and we're so excited to be able to bring life to such a beautiful project. They're going to enjoy this for many, many years to come.
