Project Snapshot
About This Project
This Scripps Ranch home is classic Spanish revival: tile roof, dark timber trim, wrought-iron balcony. The owners wanted shade over the courtyard between the home’s two wings without hiding any of that architecture. We built a custom attached aluminum pergola with an open lattice roof in a dark bronze wood-grain finish matched to the home’s existing trim, so it reads as original to the house rather than added on.
The open-rafter design throws moving bands of shade across the courtyard through the day and is strong enough to carry the owners’ hanging porch swings. Because the material is powder-coated aluminum rather than stained lumber, that dark finish will not fade, crack, or need restaining in Scripps Ranch’s full inland sun, and the structure is non-combustible, which matters in this neighborhood.
